Consumers Deserve Better from the State's Insurer of Last Resort
Houston Chronicle—November 17th, 2009
An editorial in today’s Houston Chronicle comments on the claims in a legal action by a coastal homeowner that “TWIA adjusters used pricing lower than market rates to reduce payouts, limited roof repair eligibility and discouraged policyholders from reopening claims previously denied.” Alex Winslow, the executive director of Texas Watch, a statewide consumer advocacy group, comments that “the evidence indicates TWIA denied, delayed and underpaid legitimate claims.” According to the editorial author, “Consumers deserve better from the state’s insurer of last resort….State lawmakers need to examine the allegations in the lawsuit and if they are valid, take steps to make sure homeowners get the fair coverage for which TWIA was created.”
