State Criticizes Windstorm Insurer

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association hasn’t logged consumer complaints or complied with its own internal hiring procedures, according to a report released by state regulators.

The report details an audit conducted by the Texas Department of Insurance of TWIA’s operations from January 2006 to December 2008.

The association, a state-created insurer that sells wind coverage to coastal homeowners who can’t buy it elsewhere, has been the target of about 2,000 lawsuits over how it handled Hurricane Ike-related claims.

It has also been the subject of state investigations about allegedly deceptive claims-handling practices, something the association has denied.
