Larry Taylor’s Bahamas Vacay
Texas Watch—June 22nd, 2011
Rep. Larry Taylor admitted that he is vacationing in the Bahamas rather than attending to legislative duties in Austin, the Associated Press has reported.
Several times this week the House has struggled to maintain a quorum, slowing the business of the state during a special session that is costing the taxpayers $37,500 a day. The most prominent issue still unresolved during the special session is how to reform the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA), an issue critical to Rep. Taylor’s coastal constituents.
Alex Winslow, executive director of Texas Watch, issued the following statement.
“Rep. Taylor’s constituents along the coast have more at stake in the waning days of this special session than anyone else. Lawmakers are still fiercely debating how to address TWIA’s claims handling abuses and alleged criminal misconduct following Hurricane Ike. Whether TWIA will face penalties for failing to pay claims fairly and promptly after the next storm is crucial to the livelihoods of the coastal residents and businesses that Rep. Taylor was elected to represent. His constituents are right to expect him to be on the job working on their behalf at the Capitol – not enjoying the sun and surf in the Bahamas.”
